Zell Miller vs. some liberal Republican (Lincoln Chaffee [sp]?). Miller would take the deep south, I'd bet. However, I'd bet nearly every single state would become a total toss-up. It would be a battle of party loyalty versus position loyalty.

What would a map look like?

That would be your map, which I partially agree with, although I disagree in some states. It would be a case of liberals vs. moderates vs. conservatives, as opposed to Democrats vs. Republicans.

The tally would be:

Clinton 227
Miller 178
Chafee 133

In a steady 3-way race it's very difficult to tell which state will go which.  All it takes is for that third candidate to do well to completely reverse the expected outcome (Montana '92).

The reason why every state is a tossup is because the two candidates are so similar.  It'd be like running John Kerry vs Wes Clark.

they aren't similar. They differ on almost every issue. I'd vote for Chaffee no question.

In a Clinton-Zell race, Clinton would beat Zell by a good 6 points.

Add Chaffee, and the race goes to Miller by default.

Republican voters like Zell...election season is long enough that Zell & Miller can be differentiated.

Expect a good number of votes for Chaffee in NY to be on the "Liberal" ticket, though...
