Typically we don't use the phrase 'declare war' to describe reiterating a position held for centuries.

You are right, but you certainly can't deny that there has been a major shift in the emphasis given to this aspect of the Christian teaching, as opposed to the usual focus on "traditional values" aspect of Catholicism. It's nice to see a Pope who thinks that generosity and fraternity are more important values to being a good christian than the obsessive desire to control women's lives.

I'm pretty sure some traditionalist Catholics are already doing this.

What everybody else said is also accurate. There isn't anything new about this position and most of Francis's changes have been in emphasis and manner of communication, but image and focus are very much real, especially for a religious organization. Many of us hope that more substantial changes to the Catholic Church's governance structure (and especially its governance culture) and reorientations of a few of its doctrines (the way Catholic theology is set up makes it theoretically impossible to actually change doctrine once it's been defined, ever, but doctrines can and have been clarified or revisited or recontextualized in some pretty sweeping ways) may follow one day, but for now the change in tone alone is something that a lot of people feel very welcomed and heartened by.

Has Fox News found out yet? That should be extremely amusing!
