One small quibble with your credit score method Pbrower:
Credit score was originally developed as a method of determining how good of a customer a borrower would be. This means that people with high risk of default will have poor scores, but it also means someone who eschews credit will have a somewhat lower score than an equivalent moderate credit user. I'm not sure if that factor plays a significant role in the state averages, but it's something to consider.
