FP; even though I'm not technically a member, I'm proud of them for simply existing in Utah.

All 17 of them are up against the rest of the state is how they probably feel. I'm sure they're fine and dandy.

Not half bad for a 72% Romney state. At least they have some concentrated areas of liberalism to rely on. Tongue

The county-level democratic parties deserve some mention, too. In Salt Lake County, they actually hold half of the countywide elected offices, despite Romney winning the county by 20 points.

My favorite one, though is the Rich County Democratic party. Despite the fact that this county went 90 PERCENT for Romney, making it his best county in the state and one of his ten best in the county, they had a lone democrat holding a county commissioner position - who also managed to run unopposed that same year.

Freedom Party for their effort that got them 1 representative at the federal level. Great job on their part.

Jim Matheson is definitively one of those cases where absolutely no argument makes sense that there is any superior alternative.  Sure, there are some bluedogs who could be realistically replaced with a superior democrat (though as a neoliberal my view on what a superior democrat is might differ from yours), but Matheson is simply not among them. The choice is either him or another Republican

Matheson's been voting with the Republicans on basically everything since 2010. I can't really see any difference between him and Mia Love at this point, except for the fact that a Love victory would be annoying for Dems since they would have another Allen West to criticize the Dems with. Also, Love would be safe once she entered Congress.

Matheson is the only Utah Dem that I'm not proud of.

We've still got more elected members than the Hawaii GOP.

And still slightly more than the Wyoming dems.

But he's still the most left-wing rep Utah can possibly elect with the current districts.

Perhaps, but to be honest, if he's the best we can get in Congress right now, I would rather focus on building the Utah Dems in the legislature instead. Break the GOP super-majority in Utah (and perhaps even elect a Dem statewide), and our options become a lot less bleak.

Of course, if Matheson can be elected as Governor, I believe that he could be a lot more useful there than in Congress.

Poor souls. Like the Nebraska Democratic Party, the Utah Democrats have the guts to oppose Republican hegemony in their state government. But many are still neoliberal conservatives and centrists.

Pretty much all of them are neoliberals; even the social liberals aren't as concerned about progressive economics as they should be.

Utah Democrats appear to have an unprecedented, impressive ability to outreach to browns. I welcome the diffusion of your tactics to the Idaho Democratic Party, which is in desperate need of Latino representation.

Well, we just have enough neighborhoods in our biggest city which are minority heavy, and the problem with minority outreach fixes itself. Also, our Latino communities have a long tradition of supporting Democrats.

Now all we need to do is peel off at least some moderate Mormons (not the crazy types in Provo, but the Salt Lake County folks), and we'll start winning elections.

im sure the party is infested with gun nuts.

lol you have no idea what you're talking about. Most Utah Democrats are urbanites, and hate guns. They just can't do a thing about it because of GOP domination. No, the party is infested with anti-Mormons, moderate heroes, and everything in between.
