I just realized that in one way I am a ridiculous hypocrite

As most people know, I love to trash metal, and especially black metal, and play up the anti-Christian views of black metal bands and most metalheads a lot for a long time, and have basically held metalheads to be morally degenerate anti-Christians and use the anti-Christian aspect as a big part of hating metal.

Despite this I listen to lots of anti-Christian hardcore bands including many with anti-Christian lyrics and all this time never cared, just shrugging it off as "Oh well they can believe what they want" or "I still agree with them on most things" or "They're probably nice guys personally regardless." All of which is true, but essentially I held the anti-Christian aspect of metal to be a huge negative and not caring in the slightest if it was present in what I liked. My policy was basically "I like hardcore so I'll tolerate it when bands I like are anti-Christian but I hate metal so I'll attack metal bands for being anti-Christian."

And for well over a decade this double standard went unnoticed, and I didn't realize it all until now. It just hit me like a ton of bricks and the realization overtook me...weird.

No I still hate metal and yes I'll listen to anti-Christian hardcore, but a realization like that is WEIRD.

Extending ideological consistency to your media tastes is a pointless exercise, and rest assured there is similar dissonance at hand on the other side of the fence. Seriously, ask any metalhead their thoughts on Christianity in the scene and the response will be scathingly negative. Then mention Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus and watch as they collapse into a pile of umms and errs while they attempt to simultaneously rebuke Christian metal and tolerate it, either out of their own appreciation for those bands or out of reverence for them as old greats.

Usually it's some variation of "well there are bands that exist solely to promote religion (Crimson Twilight, Mortification, etc.) and secular bands with some casually religious members and songs." which I tend to agree with, but a better idea is to simply stick to your guns as you have been and allow for these categorical exceptions because it's not that important.

You'd be surprised how many metal bands do not fit that description. Outside of black metal, metal bands who are genuinely anti-religion are pretty rare.
