I don't think any President was truly feared by the American populace. I'd say LBJ in regards to how he treated fellow politicians and world leaders, if anyone.

Well, we've got two answers now - one Democrat and one Republican - so I think it qualifies as a legitimate question.

LBJ didn't fear others.  He was so confident that he owned everyone that he treated few with respect.

Nixon was definitely the most paranoid President.

Could it be a Party Boss instead of a President? Karl Rove took the role when Dubya was president.

Haha. That is half-correct. Tongue

I am taking Political Philosophy this semester (specifically, the philosophical underpinnings of the American system of governance). Machiavelli has been mentioned, but only briefly. I had read a portion of "The Prince" in the past, and hearing his name this semester reminded me of "The Prince". So I began pondering the question of which U.S. President most closely personifies the "prince."

So, while I am taking the course, this isn't for an assignment - just a question about which I am curious. Smiley

Yeah, I'd say LBJ, and to a lesser extent Nixon, are those that come to mind.

In France, Mitterrand might be an even better example.

FDR, in the 20th Century, and I mean that in a very good way.  I take the position that to be a Machiavellian leader is not necessarily a bad thing.
