Back again for the grand year 1908, 4 days.

Debs and Hanford are back for round 2 with SPUSA, after winning in 1904 rather handily.

Prohibition goes with Chafin who is from Wisconsin originally but now represents Arizona, College President Watkins is his running mate.

The "Independence Party" is a William Randolph Hearst populist stalking horse based out of New York, it bears elements of the populist party, but again is a vanity project of the publishing magnate based upon his "municipal ownership league" that he used to run for Mayor of New York City in 1905 (this populist movement was backed by a wide variety of reformers, immigrants, unionists and others against the New York machine of Tammany Hall, and in favor of public ownership of utilities).  Hearst is a Democrat otherwise.

"The party platform argued against corrupt machine politics, for the eight-hour work day, for the creation of a Department of Labor, for government ownership of utilities (including railroads), and for the establishment of a central bank. "

Thomas Hisgen is a businessman (mainly in the field of Oil) who has battled with Standard Oil. His running mate is journalist John Graves.

Georgia politician Thomas Watson is back again, though losing influence, he represents the Populists, but again this the far more nativist, racist and anti-semetic variety than the original group.

August Gillhaus of New York represents Socialist Labor along with Donald Munro of Virginia.

This is a close all for me between Hisgen and Debs, but I'll go with Hisgen this time, since I'm not really a socialist, and I like the IND party support for trust busting and populism.

The more I read this, the more I appreciate our two party system...

Anyway, Prohibition again, reluctantly...

Certainly one of the benefits of denying people a choice is they can't vote for something you dislike.

While ordinarily I'd be a Watson guy, I can't miss out on the Independence party.

Hisgen wins the day with the Independence party 288 to 171 for Debs and the Socialists, while Prohibition places 3rd carrying 5 states for a total of 49 electoral votes.

Hisgen relied on the Hearst machine in the north, along with populist votes in the south to create an odd East coast Northeast/South coalition where most Americans live, and outmuscled the Socialists, who did well west of the Mississippi, but mainly in small states.

Prohibition did well in the midwest
