"Update: Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa isn’t about to let this end with Attorney General Greg Abbott’s latest tweet, saying in a statement that Abbott didn’t go far enough to address the insult: “Greg Abbott stated appreciation for a tweet that insults women and the mentally disabled, and now doesn’t even have the decency to apologize? Hate and discrimination have no place in our public discourse. Greg Abbott highlighted such hateful language on Twitter, and now needs to apologize to the people of Texas. This offensive behavior is the opposite of ‘positive,’ and is exactly why Texans deserve someone better than Abbott as our next governor.”

Original post:
First RedState’s Erick Erickson called state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, ‘Abortion Barbie” in the wake of her filibuster against tighter abortion restrictions and the resulting national profile that has her mulling a race for governor.

Now there is a “thanks for your support” from the Twitter feed of Attorney General Greg Abbott, the top GOP contender for governor, to a backer who called Davis “Retard Barbie.”

The insult quickly caught the attention of the Democratic Governors Association, Politico and the Texas Democratic Party, whose chairman, Gilberto Hinojosa, said in a statement:

“That Greg Abbott would thank a supporter for calling Senator Wendy Davis a ‘Retard Barbie’ is absolutely disgusting and disturbing. This is what Republicans think about women — that a Harvard law school graduate, State Senator, and a long time fighter for Texas families deserves such inappropriate slander. Greg Abbott endorses such disrespect. The people of Texas deserves so much better than this from their public officials. And the women of Texas deserve leaders who respect them as human beings.”

The tweet from @jefflegal said, “@GregAbbott_TX would absolutely demolish idiot @WendyDavisTexas in Gov race – run Wendy run! Retard Barbie to learn life lesson.”

Abbott responded, “Jeff, thanks for your support.”

Abbott later posted, “FYI: I thank supporters on Twitter, but I don’t endorse anyone’s offense language. Stay positive”

The Quorum Report’s Scott Braddock is among those who weighed in: “‘Abortion Barbie’ and now ‘Retard Barbie.’ Doesn’t @Mattel have lawyers?”

Of interest: Dave Carney, who’s top political adviser to Abbott, drew national attention in 2010 when he used the word “retarded” to describe something he disliked during GOP primary debate negotiations when he was chief consultant to Gov. Rick Perry in his race for re-election"

Interesting, but there is still no chance that Barbara Millicent Roberts will be able to beat Abbott if she should choose to run for governor.

Reminder: Chance that this was Abbott himself, approved by Abbott, ever seen by Abbott, anything by Abbott, is about 0%

^^^^

Here is the key reason why this will be quickly forgotten. Most gaffes are things the candidates actually say, not something a random internet supporter says, even if the supporter gets a thank you note.

Texas Tribune's take on the story suggest it really was him ( http://www.texastribune.org/2013/08/19/abbott-incident-highlights-risks-tweeting-candidat/ ):

And here is the link they provided to his Twitpic of him and Diana Ross: https://twitter.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/296826112997224448

I agree that this'll be forgotten quickly but I think Abbott has the potential to actually gaffe on the stump.

Surprise, surprise: Texan Republican is a scumbag. Remember this is a party that ran a guy who literally made rape jokes in press conferences against Ann Richards.

Saying something like "Retarted Barbie" sounds like something a 13 year old would say. A grown man shouldn't say that kind of stuff.

No, that was a different RPT.

The RPT has gone from being a party that runs candidates like these...
