I don't understand what exempts urban Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Caucasians, African-Americans and other assorted ethnic groups from being ignorant bigots in the first place.

Traditional Asian cultures aren't exactly tolerant of homosexuality.

Traditional Asian cultures aren't exactly tolerant of homosexuality.

Depends on what you mean by "traditional". Quite a few Asian cultures were very tolerant of homosexuality at different times in history. In some cases the shift in attitudes came as a result of western colonialism and the resulting imposition of values (India is a good example of this). That tolerance was gone most places by a century or two ago at least, though, and definitely people in those cultures who consider themselves "traditional" are very homophobic nowadays.

Neither are Traditional Black cultures or Traditional White cultures.

Persecution of gays or stigmatization of homosexuality was actually quite rare in sub-saharan africa prior to either the arrival of Islam or the Europeans.

Why is it relevant to highlight that the councilwoman is Asian? It's not like it's really pertinent to the story.

I'm curious to know if she's a registered Republican. I know the whole "assumptions" thing, but it would make sense if she's a GOPer.

Her district is 64% Romney and there is a video of her speaking at a Republican women's event, so it's safe to assume she's a Republican.

She is out of line with her comments I don't care what political party she is from. Gay people are live like anybody else except what gender they are attracted to.

Yeah.  Look at many places in Africa.  After the Christian missionaries did a number on the people the continent is now rife with homophobia.  The best part is those same Western countries that stirred up all this homophobia are no going to Africa and criticizing the place.  The Western world is not taken seriously in Africa.

It is quite ironic how western starting to take a stand against homophobia has triggered a backlash against gays for being "un-African/[insert place here]", as people discussed a lot in the Russian thread, when really it was western imperialists who introduced homophobia to those places in the first place.

It's relevant because it flies in the face of the archetypal "someone in Texas or some other red state said something really ignorant about Group X." When you hear about a politician doing something like this, people fill in the blanks. They guess that the public official in question is some blustering, conservative white guy who's mad that the gays are ruining his precious 'Merica. They don't anticipate an Asian female software engineer with a graduate degree who has lived in multiple countries and resides in one of the largest cities in the country would be engaging in such provincial foolishness.

Not necessarily.  In the case of Bobby Jindal, he has become so much of a "bubba" that many have seem to have forgotten his background.
