US attorney general unveils prison reform

Last Modified: 13 Aug 2013 03:53

US Attorney General Eric Holder has called for major changes to the country's criminal justice system, announcing measures aimed at easing prison overcrowding.

The measures will scale back the use of harsh prison sentences for certain drug-related crimes, divert people convicted of low-level offences to drug treatment and community service programmes and expand a prison programme to allow for release of some elderly, non-violent offenders.

In a speech at the American Bar Association in San Francisco on Monday, Holder said he is mandating a change to Justice Department policy so that low-level, non-violent drug offenders with no ties to large-scale organisations, gangs or cartels will not be charged with offences that impose mandatory minimum sentences.

Prison reform is a good idea which doesn't get enough attention because no politician wants to appear sympathetic with murderers and rapists. Makes for a good attack ad. Kudos to Holder for standing up for it.

He's still a horrible AG though.

I never thought I would agree with Eric Holder on one thing, this is actually something that needs to be talked about in this country, the amount of people in jail for using non-violent drugs just for themselves is ridiculous.

That there are still non-violent drug users in prison is a mark of shame upon our nation.

Agree 100%. Especially considering what a large percentage of prisoners fall into this category....and when we have overcrowding issues, it just is moronic not to consider reform.

Here's an idea: send Eric Holder to jail, release all non-violent drug offenders.

Good on him for taking a stand on this.  That he's going to reform how these cases are prosecuted is good news if true - but then it was good news when medical marijuana growers and dispensaries legal under state law were supposedly not going to be raided and prosecuted and look how that turned out.  The law itself needs to change, otherwise these sorts of announcements are meaningless.
