Though this article was from last year, it's still obviously quite relevant. Not sure how I feel about his admittedly interesting ideas for a solution, though (more localized and direct layers of government).

Well we live in a two party world.  For most of us our party is picked at birth or soon after we leave high school.  Something mindblowingly extraordinary would have to happen for me to vote for a Republican for state wide office or Congress.

With these Gerrymandered districts the primary is where all the action is.  Seriously though who votes in primaries?  It would be next to pointless for me to vote amongst a bunch of barely known or unknown candidates.  Frankly it would be irresponsible.  So only activists and a some party insiders vote.

Yes the American public is pretty damn pathetic and we get what we deserve as long as we keep electing the people we do. It's scary as hell that someone who doesn't know who the Vice-President is, nothing of either major party, or what year we were founded can cancel out my vote. It's scary as hell.
