http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/27-very-strongly-worded-messages-the-women-of-texas-have-for

Progressives, and especially progressive women, are fired up in Texas after the abortion bill filibuster and they have found a hero in Wendy Davis. It all seems similar to what happened nationwide in the early 1990s. The Clarence Thomas hearings, centering around the alleged sexual harassment of Anita Hill, angered many women and motivated them to go to the polls in '92, sending a record number of women to congress and other legislative chambers.

With an open gubernatorial race in Texas in 2014 and a renewed focus on abortion and other women's issues, could we see Texas voters elect a large number of women and progressives? Maybe it could kickstart the elusive "blueing" of Texas everybody on Atlas seems to be so excited about.

lolno. Texas is not really a place to run on being pro-choice. Now it is entirely possible that more women are elected next year, even pro-choice, but I suspect that it would mostly be at the expense of male Democrats in seats already "blue."

Sorry to burst  your bubble and put a damper on your absolutely palpable excitement Mr. Cope, but the answer to your question is "NO", certainly not nearly to the extent to which you seem to believe.

Everybody's excited about it?

I do hope we have a year of the pro-choice fiscally conservative Republican woman Kay Bailey Hutchison type in Texas in 2014.

I don't think you'll see women burst out into state offices in TX like that, but you might see a sky blue tide perhaps. But the motivation here basically the unpopularity of Perry, nothing else.

Yeah, I know those protestors probably don't represent the political views of the average Texan, or even the average woman from Texas.

I don't think 2014 will be the year Godot finally arrives for Texas Democrats, but it has the potential to be the start of their revival.

No. To get another Ann Richards, you need a repeat of 1990. That requires at least two things...

1. Rick Perry becomes significantly more unpopular. His approval ratings haven't been anything to write home about in years but I mean he needs to be embroiled in some sort of scandal.

2. The GOP candidate needs to be another Claytie Williams (he was basically 1990's Todd Akin with a little bit of the Rich Texan from The Simpsons thrown in for good measure).

Also., I'm amused by the signs that say "Republicans can't defetus!"  Don't they realize that pro-life Republicans don't want any woman to defetus?

Greg Abbott and David Dewhurst seem like good candidates for #2. Plus they're so closely associated with Perry they'd be unpopular from the start and get go.

Some nutjob on The Huffington Post is encouraging Texas women to go on a sex strike. Lol, no one would put up with that.

They may have to. It worked in Kenya, which is after all more patriarchal than Texas.

Edit: Vivian Norris idea is unrealistic because Texas women are (almost) as conservative as Texas men, I just got annoyed with Nappys no one will put up with that-nonsense.

If we had a conservative in the White House then I would agree but 2014 will be a replica of 2010 and a referendum on Obama.

The political climate in Texas would have to shift fast and hard. It is not enough that Rick Perry is an unpopular jerk.

Um, HELL NO.

Texas Governor's Mansion is likely staying in GOP hands for awhile until at least 2022.

Including down-ballot statewide offices for that matter staying in GOP hands as well.
