That Lib Dem ward in north-west and central Shrewsbury seems to have really weird boundaries.

Is there any evidence at all in voting patterns of residual Welshness west of Oswestry, in the area with place names like Llanyblodwel, Trefonen and Croesau Bach?  The wards in the area are all Tory, but they all seem to cover areas which look like part of England on a map too.

Yes, it's because of the town centre (always called 'Quarry' - after the park - for local government purposes) which is always a bit of a problem. The pairing wit Coton Hill looks weird, but is better than some of the alternatives...

Pretty much the entire of the old Oswestry District is less Tory - other parties are so horrifically badly organised there these days that the recent Tory performance is ridiculously flattering - than the old North Shropshire district or the area covered by ages ago by Atcham RD, but it doesn't have much to do with that type of thing. For instance, Weston Rhyn and St Martins were majority Welsh speaking as recently as 1900 and are the weakest settlements in the area for the Tories (but are in different divisions for rather dubious reasons; works out as a brilliantly effective gerrymander), but the reason for Tory weakness there is the fact that they were mining villages.

Obviously worth noting that one of the new kipper county councillors has resigned - for being an idiotic racist - already. Here's the story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hereford-worcester-22533619

Anyone care to dispute this? My initial reaction when the PNV came out was to consider it strange.

I think the 23% is too high, and would also like to see the methodology.

And Labour's 29% seems like what you'd get, if you thought the entire nation voted like these wards. The only by-election, for example, to confirm anything like the result the BBC gave us would be Eastleigh.

23% does sound overhigh, but (while the Beeb may well be overestimating them there) this guy is obviously crassly underestimating UKIP in the metro boroughs (he seems to think they consist entirely of major cities... have a look at Shields or Rawmarsh maybe? Roll Eyes )

A rather remarkable coalition has just been formed in Norfolk: UKIP/Labour/LibDem/Independent with support from the Greens. Labour will provide the leader. Details here.

Warwickshire 2005 - 2013
Sorry for the change in angle for the 2013 map

(Warwickshire 2005: NOC, boundary changes)

(Warwickshire 2009: Con GAIN from NOC)
Gains are shown by the losing party's colour around the outside of the ward

(Warwickshire 2013: Con LOSS to NOC)

So Labour regained all of their losses from 2009? apart from the one that Greens nicked in Nuneaton

That seems to have been Con in 2005. Greens also seem to have nicked one straight from Labour in Warwick.

What's the light blue?

In 2005, Labour won 21 seats. Of those 21 seats, 12 were Labour losses in 2009 and all of them returned to the Labour fold in 2013.

The Independents are grey (Dunchurch), Stratford First are light grey and cyan is the Ratepayers.

If I may be permitted, a new thread in "another place" is starting what should be a long but entertaining contest to fine the best electoral ward name in local government  - http://vote-2012.proboards.com/thread/2889/which-best-local-authority-ward
