How does that work in Massachusetts though? I remember hearing the state's county governments were effectively abolished so does that mean every 'town' has a city election clerk

Yes.

Interesting. There must be no unincorporated areas left in the state that aren't covered by a town then.

Here there are plenty of unincorporated areas with county clerks handling elections and those clerks mainly report county-wide results so you have to dig into the precinct data if you want to construct the city results.

There aren't any unincorporated municipalities in MA.

This probably gets asked every single election, but why is western MA so Democratic? I just noticed they gave over 60% to Coakley in 2010.

Similar to Vermont, very socially liberal and also went through the transformation in which the progressive republicans back then became liberal.

I was on a site in 2010 and when some of the heavy Dem areas came in out west, they got panicked thining Brown had lost a landslide.

I would state that it wasn't just progressive Republicans becoming liberal, but that a lot of Coolidge types became progressive as religion continued to decline and environmentalism became big. There was also a large influx from places like New York City.

Western MA is really the Berkshires.  I go there almost every other year for vacations.  I noticed that people there are heavily influenced by Yankee culture.  They have this emphasis on perfecting earthly society through social engineering, individual self-denial for the common good, and the aggressive assimilation of outsiders into this culture.  Yes, enviornmentalism is part of it as well.  So as the GOP moved to become the party of limited government they will shift their vote toward the Dems.

Everything in southern New England and New Jersey is in a municipal or town government.

I'm glad Markey won, but it should have been more. At least Markey did better than Warren, with a possibly less Dem friendly electorate. By county, Markey picked up Essex and Norfolk and lost Hampden and Bristol.

How interesting that any towns swung away from 2010 to 2012.
