While I recognize that the court system in not capable of putting everybody on trial and that plea bargains are the grease that makes it all work, I am nonetheless very uncomfortable with giving people the choice of a more leniant penalty in exchange for giving up their right to trial.

In conclusion though I have to say I am 100% against the death penalty.  The reason is sometimes the wrong person is convicted.  I'm actually astonished that objection wasn't sited more in this thread.  The justice system's first goal should be protecting the innocent.

I'm certainly in favor of DNA testing or whatever is necessary to make sure the innocent are protected.  There are also so many judicial layers of review that are done before it's carried out as well.  All good things.
