Wow! I knew it hit the majority a few years ago and would keep growing, but this seems really fast!

It's nuts how fast things are moving. A big chunk of don't-really-cares in the middle shook loose from the no side and slammed over into the yes side.

Or possibly a bunch of don't-really-cares on the conservative side have decided this cause is hurting the issues they really care about and are anxious to let go of it.

Altho to make it clear, as the article cited in the OP does later on, that support for the US Constitution overriding State laws on this subject includes support from those who wish for the US Constitution to strike down State laws that recognize same-sex marriages.  Not that that will happen. There is zero chance now for the Federal Marriage Amendment to pass.

I've said it multiple times.  There are many people like me who went from WTF (meaning what on earth are you talking about), to opposed, to indifferent, to give them what they want and let's move on to other more important issues.

The nastier the fight has gotten the less decent people wish to align themselves with the fire breathing right wing extremists.

Seriously at this point who wants to be the girl in the picture screaming?  Or on her team?

I think this is one of those times when a President made a big difference, especially in the African-American community. Many point to high AA turnout in 2008 resulting in the passing of Prop 8 here in CA, something that most assume would not pass today.

As George Will says, opposition is "literally dying out."

As I was just writing in the 2016 forum, I think the 2016 Democratic primary will have candidates trying to one-up each other to show who supported SSM earliest and who has done the most to help. And in the last open Dem primary in 2008 I don't think any of the candidates supported SSM. At the time Obama and Clinton were against it but for civil unions. Same with Kerry in 2004.

This is what sealed the deal for me... sure, I believe very much in the issue of equality for gay men and lesbian women...but I especially think of how I want to be remembered by my children, grandchildren, and community. Some time very soon- those who oppose gay marriage will be remembered as Governor Wallace in the schoolhouse door...

The question wording is pretty favorable to same-sex marriage. ABC/WaPo has always shown somewhat better numbers for same-sex marriage than other pollsters due to wording. But you can still look at the trend to see how fast things have changed.

Whenever I write politicians about gay marriage, I urge them to consider their children and grandchildren. Politicians know that gay marriage will happen, and that gay rights will be looked back at as the "great cause" of their time.

Looking good in the history books is quite the lovely reward, don't you think?

I've heard some argue that if you're not gay, you should not get worked up about the issue, either way.  They're wrong.  It's an important issue, since it's a civil rights issue.  People who cared about the rights of blacks in the 1960s, even if they were not black, went down in history as being right.

That's a very dangerous sentiment, tossed to and fro by public opinion. Conforming your views to what appears to be on the right side of history  produces some nasty results if you are in Germany circa 1935, Russia in the 1950's etc.

Because they're an intellectual equivalent?... it's good to know it took a while longer than expected to get to the totalitarianism comparisons.

Irrelevant. Clarence wants to be on the right side of history and has to make a judgement call based off present information. Present information can naturally be quite flawed.

If you want to support SSM, then by all means go nuts, but do it because you believe it's right, not because you're afraid of your grandkids thinking poorly of you.

I don't believe anybody intentionally holds beliefs they think will be proven wrong in the future.

No, he wants to be on the right side of what's right rather than riding with the status quo as many of his generation are content to do. When you think of how your actions affect other people, it often benefits society.

From what I know, he believes it is right and a justification being he knows how ridiculous it will look in the future that such a prohibition existed. It's not THE reason, but not wanting to look how ridiculous the segregationists look now is a decent supporting position.

IIRC, Gravel and Kucinich did.

Anyway, this seems to be a case of olds dying off due to the nature of capitalism and recessions(more desire for the offspring to get the inheritance).
