As a citizen of the Mideast, I hereby propose the following amendment to the Mideast Constitution in order to protect the rights of the people.

"Any initiative that passes in an election with 75% or greater overall turnout may not be amended or repealed by the Assembly except upon a three-fourths vote if the Assembly consists of five members or by a unanimous vote if the Assembly consists of three members."

Why? I really don't understand the thinking behind this besides making initiatives impossible to pass.

Being opposed to direct democracy in principle, I oppose anything that makes it more difficult for our elected assembly to legislate.

Strongly opposed. The regions evolves - today's Mideasterners shouldn't be forced to live by laws of the past.

I don't think such an amendment is necessary. If the people approve an initiative and the Assembly then passes a new bill which amends the statute in question you can always protest the bill's passage (only four signatures are needed) and force another public vote.

Yeah, I'm from California originally, so my experience of direct democracy...*shudder*

Anyways, like ZuWo said, you can always just call another referendum if the assembly tries to overturn the results of a previous one.

I will place my name on it as well.  Even if it goes nowhere, it is a strong symbolic gesture.

I saw a few comments floating around about dismantling measures recently.  That's unacceptable.  What the people have given the people can take away, and this kind of amendment embodies that principal.  Yes, there can be another initiative, but that's not the point.  The assembly is subservient to the people.  If times change, as they frequently do, than a popular measure should be overturned with another popular measure, not as part as some backroom deal.

Signed
