Loser still seems to be Americas favourite derogatory term. In Denmark we imported it in the 80s and it is well established now.
I never liked it because it implies that live is a game played by certain rules and those who cant cut it are just bad players or have been dealt a bad hand.
That may be the case, but since the rules of life are not the same for everybody (the privileged play by a different set of rules than the underprivileged), I don't really think the game metaphor is appropriate.
In a game generally you can have different strength from the start, but you play by the same rules. Even games with secret rules from the start are the same for everybody. But of course, there are games constructed with a build in advantage to one of the players, still they are a clear minority and feels a bit odd.
(not counting drawing first in chess or something like that)

So do you like the word loser? Do you use it yourself?

No, and I immediately label anyone who does 'not worth knowing'.

Loser?!!!

Don't even get me started.  You cannot imagine what a paranoid, hyper-reactive society we live in.

We just got email from the boy's teacher about how now all visiters must be "buzzed in."  It was already pretty much a fortress, but in the light of the events of connecticut now we must be buzzed in.  OMG, the children!!!  Yeah, right.

Yeah, I had to sit there, in the principal's office, for at least an hour about two months ago, because my son called another boy a loser.  I don't know where he heard the term.  Maybe on one of the violetnt video games we shouldn't be letting him play.  Maybe on one of the horrible TV shows we shouldn't be letting him watch.  But whereever he heard it, he remembered it.

Now, did I get a note the time some little bastard threw his glasses against the wall?  Did I get an apology from the recess monitor or from the principal?  Did I get an explanation about the fact that some little brat decided it was fun to cost my son's parents some money to buy him a new pair of glasses?  Not a single fucking word!!!!

But let my boy use the world loser, which is apparently very, very high on the list of unapproved, politically-incorrect wordlist, and I get a fucking invitation to spend an hour in the principals office!

Glad they have their priorities straight.

In short, yes, I have heard the word LOSER and I have a very strong opinion about America's (over)reaction to it.  And you can bet that the superintendent and the assistant superintendent of the Manheim Township School District are very much aware of my opinions on the matter.  Unfortunately, it is not an election year for the school board.

Dude, these reactions wouldn't be necessary if people had standards.  I know it is difficult for you, considering you aren't one yourself, but it should be your goal as a father to raise your son to be a gentleman.

It's not a word I've really given much thought to since about 1998.

Generally horrible, but more of a symptom than a problem in itself. Sadly, we happen to live in an increasingly competitive society where your happiness will depend on whether you "win" or "lose" the game.
