Looks like we have some right-wing domestic terrorists here.

Is this some type of a coup? What was their motive? Why did they want to infect apple orchards with poison??

They are anarchists who want to overthrow the government. Sowing chaos is kind of what anarchists of this stripe do. It's basic terrorism really - make people think the terrorist group can't be stopped by the government so that the people will bow to the group's demands and the government loses support and stability.

The oddest part of the story is the guy Aguigui - apparently working class - got $500,000 from an insurance settlement, (The Atlantic - The plots were allegedly financed by a $500,000 insurance settlement Aguigui received from the death of his wife.) and the best thing he can think of to do with it is some terrorist nonsense?  What the heck has become of americans?   I never imagined such anhedonia could exist.

That's not anhedonia, that's a kinky violence fetish. Perfectly concurrent with his choice of employer, of course.

...$500,000 from an insurance settlement... the best thing he can think of to do with it is some terrorist nonsense? ...I never imagined such anhedonia could exist.

I see!  Possibly a good point, though if you just want violence and you have $500,000 in ready cash, there are safer ways to get it than plotting to attack the US govt.  What they did just guarantees prison.  I guess they were 'true believers'.  One wonders if the poor lady whose death eventuated the insurance payout was also a victim...
