"It's really American to avoid paying taxes, legally."

-- Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), quoted by Huffington Post, arguing that Mitt Romney shouldn't be criticized for using off-shore tax havens.

I don't blame Mitt for taking advantage of the loopholes in the tax code, nor will most other people.  What I and they will blame Mitt for is not proposing ways to shut those loopholes down.

But why would he?

Because its the only way he can possibly lower tax rates, balance the budget, and increase war spending as he calls for?  Besides, with if private sector experience has any relevance to running a government, he should be able to at the very least enable us to target the loopholes that have the least economic benefit.

Look, the Republican Party (just like the Dems) has some stupid people, but Lindsey Graham is really in a different league. He once said that "look, freedom speech is a good idea, but we're in a war". This guy is clearly a moron who doesn't deserve to be a dog catcher, much less one of the most "respected" senators out there and a "moderate".

Typical actions by those who champion the greatness of the "free market"!

The party of Lincoln, ladies and gentlemen.

They're barely even the party of Reagan any more.

We notice that the tax laws favor the idle rich (as opposed to the working rich) -- taxes on capital gains (and "carried interest") are lower than taxes on a rich man's labor.

We also notice that the Democrats never propose to change this, even when they have unfettered power as in 2009-10.

It's not accident that the richest places in America vote overwhelmingly Democrat.
