Great on the referendum, godawful at everything else. Draft-dodging in WWII makes him an uber-HP character-wise. Still one of our most influential PMs.

Overall, HP.

HP, betrayed the Quebecois people. Now its forever too late for an independent Quebec with all the allophone immigration.

Fuddleduddlewit. His impact on Canadian politics was - and continues - to be massive though, even if it tends to be of the backlash variety.

Well 1) Americans ignore Canadian politics, and 2) given that, what we knew about Trudeau was basically just People Magazine kind of stuff (the youth after all the fossils, the skiing, the trophy wife, etc.), as opposed to anything substantive, because it really didn't matter to us what he did substantively. All we knew, is that he wanted Quebec to remain a part of Canada (we didn't care one way or the other), and was the great hope of Anglophones there to keep the French beast at bay. Later on, the Western plains seem to grow to hate him for some reason. So, in sum, I have no opinion whatsoever. Smiley
