The Romney campaign is suggesting a conspiracy theory in which Santorum is running to sandbag Romney so that Santorum could be the nominee in 2016. First of all, Rick Santorum is running to be the nominee in 2012. And, second, are we suppose to believe that the 60-70% of Republican electorate that consistently votes for ABR are doing so to reelect Obama, or further the campaign of Rick Santorum in 2016?

Measuring the drapes in one thing. Assuming your opponents buy into your overconfidence is another.

Couldn't McCain have said the same thing about Romney in 2008?

No, because Romney didn't stay in after super tuesday. He could have said the same thing about Huckabee.

Nah, he's just spinning his little tangled web to raise some dough, and try to get some of the heavy hitters to put pressure on Rick to tone it down is my guess. I doubt he really believes it.

Exactly how high would the ABR vote be without his incessant appeals to the bandwagon fallacy?

Romney was more realistic about the need to mask your hope your party loses in 2008. It was going to be a Democratic year and he wouldn't have to do anything anyway. Plus, he didn't have populist sway over a party faction the way Santorum does.  Romney probably perceived more skepticism of his conservatism that gave him less leeway to hint he wanted the Democrats to win.  Also, McCain didn't make the mistake of ruling Romney out as a running mate like Romney did to Santorum. So Romney had another incentive to behave.

Whatever. If Romney can't take it, he shouldn't be dishing it out.
