Santorum wins Iowa, closely followed by Paul and Romney at a farther distance. Romney then surprisingly loses New Hampshire to Paul.

What happens next?

Paul won't win New Hampshire if he hasn't won Iowa.

Santorum would probably win South Carolina, and who knows what happens in Florida.

Paul won't win New Hampshire if he hasn't won Iowa.

This.  For purposes of this exercise though, it would kill Romney.  Obviously the winner of SC and Florida will then be in place to win.

At this point, someone like Gingrich or even Perry could rise up again and win those states.

Santorum wins SC and is the nominee.

Michael Bloomberg declares his candidacy for the Presidency soon thereafter and spends half his fortune on the biggest third party campaign in history. Wins several big states - not enough to win, but enough to keep anyone from getting over 270.

Third-place Santorum then elected President in a party-lines vote by the House.

Armageddon ensues. Smiley

Don't forget the part where I consider suicide afterwards.

I think its more likely that Santorum gets a close second to Paul in Iowa.  Paul could conceivably win NH, and Santorum may be able to consolidate all of the conservatives.

This scenario is so implausible that I'm not even going to waste my time entertaining it.

Santorum surges to win South Carolina. Romney's last stand is in Florida, where he probably manages to pull off a narrow victory. Nevada is a very close contest between Romney and Paul. The primary race then goes on for months between Romney, Santorum and Paul, although the latter never has a realistic chance of clinching the nomination. Eventually, the Republican electorate decides that Romney is basically the only electable candidate of the three, so he does in fact clinch the nomination.

I don't see how Paul would win New Hampshire but...

then Gingrich winning South Carolina would just make this the best thing ever. Romney couldn't win Florida, they are too influenced by flavors of the month. Although let's say he did. NOW it is really fun.
