I disagree. I think social issues pretty much evenly divide the country, whereas economic issues favor Republicans.

Those who voted on social issues in the 2004 election strongly favored Republicans.  However, I think if everyone voted on social issues, it would favor democrats.  A majority of the county is pro-choice and a majority of the county favors at least civil unions for homosexual couples.

A majority of the country favors restrictions on abortion, and the Republicans are in favor of civil unions.

the Republicans are in favor of civil unions.

"the Republicans" implies it's in their platform, or at least a majority do, so show me proof of this, I highly doubt it's in their platform since a Constitutional ban on gay marriage is.

And I mean proof a majority do, not individual Republicans.

And Alcon's map is waaaaaaaay too pro-Republican, especially with NH and OR.

The most important Republican in the party, George W. Bush, does. A ban on gay marriage is not incompatible with civil unions.

Er, no. It only bans courts from instituting civil unions.

show me where he has come out in support of civil unions.

Since as governor of Texas he opposed gay relationships even being legal (he said he'd veto any repeal of the sodomy law), this is a huge leap.

Find a link to the transcript or quote then. Explain how it's compatible with his stance as governor though.

I don't have a link, and I don't know anything about what his stance as Governor was. I know that in the 2000 debates he said it was none of government's business what people did in their bedrooms.

Er, no. It only bans courts from instituting civil unions.

Here's what it says:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.

It seems to me that civil unions are basically the purely legal versions of marriages.

Either way, the amendment says absolutely nothing about the courts, so I have no idea what you mean there.  It bans same-sex marriage and the "legal incidents thereof" at both the federal and state level, so you can't say that he just wants it left up to the states, either.

Yeah:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.

This bans activist courts from instituting civil unions. Not state legislatures, which can do what they want.
