I've been curious lately about all these Romney endorsements and whatnot.  I wonder, do Republicans really believe he's the best man for the job, or does all his support from the GOP stem form the fact that he performs the best against polls with Barack Obama?  I'm sure at least half of his supporters would put someone like Bachmann or Cain or Gingrich in the White House, if they could hand-pick the next president.

The reason(s) individuals support Mittens, or do not, I suspect are highly diverse. Torie to Spade to Phil to jmfcst to Brandon to Carolina to Moderate to BS Bob to Krazen to Winfield, and round the circuit you go, and I suspect you will not hear anything remotely approaching a symphony - well maybe one written in 12 tones.

I support Mitt Romney for President because I believe he is the most qualified of all the GOP candidates and would be the most prepared for the White House. Whether or not he'll be successful, I feel fairly confident he would do a better job than anyone else running.

Yes, that is probably the most common reason to be in his camp, and one that I certainly share. It certainly should be.

I think they like him because he called them to personally solicit their support:

Which is quite courteous of him, and preferable to Biden's method of soliciting support....which is to pledge not to karate chop his defenseless hostage:

That looks like a pretty happy hostage.

I would theoretically support Romney because he's the most competent of the bunch... but he's not.

Mosly because I think Romney is the candidate that can expand the Republican base beyond Evangelicals and white Southerners.

So the second option, technically.

With my vote, I think we're up to 23 tones now.  It's like the music at an Indian restaurant, sort of.

Ah, ask the same question after the primaries are over.  If he wins the nomination, then it'll be less like Indian Buffet music and more like Grunge.  We'll be united under full three-note chords with lots of distortion.  I can live with that.
