As part of my month in Paris, I have planned 3 short side trips... 3 days in London, 2 days in Geneva and one other...

I've decided I want it to be relatively close, and nowhere I need to deal with flying...

So I have now... I think, gotten it down to these two options... what do people think?

I should stress I want calm, quiet, nice architecture etc etc... so 'party places' are not in consideration...

Thoughts on alternatives perhaps?

This will be mid-December...

Of the two you mentioned, I'd certainly say the former...but here's one more idea: Cologne. Especially if you're interested in architecture. Thalys operates good, fast rail service from Paris.

Cologne is also on the shortlist... and it's also where my grandmother was born.

Considering she died last month, it would be kind of appropriate.

I would say Cologne too; though I have to say I have a soft spot for Bruges.

None of them. Amsterdam or Barcelona.

What would you do in Luxembourg ? Watching banks/bankers and office buildings ?

I've been to both places and I enjoyed both Bruges and Luxembourg. Try to visit both places if you can, these towns are lovely!

I thought it's BRTD thread until I read "Luxembourg".

He mentioned he doesn't want party places and, though I've never travelled outside the USA, I always think of Amsterdam and Barcelona as party places.  The former more than the latter, of course.

I'm not going to give any advice, however, as I have never traveled outside of the States.

Bruges is nice, but much more provincial and less city-like than Cologne. If I were in your situation, I'd probably opt for Cologne. Especially given the family connection.

For places with a simmilar feel to Luxembourg (,which apart from the fortifications, I find a bit bland), have you considered Strassbourg, or maybe Brussels?

(Also, Amsterdam is much more than just a party place. It may not be the most beautifull city in Northern Europe, but it's certainly not a hell-hole which only potheads can appreciate)

What would you do in Luxembourg? I've always thought it's nothing but farms and banks. Bruges is an actual tourism city. Hopefully you'd like it better than Colin Farrel in that movie though, lol.

I've decided on Cologne - it's a 3hr trip from Paris and I can into the Hilton for $120 per night... happy.

Mostly due to the family connection.

You'll either find Bruges to be a fairytale sort of place with swans, or a boring sh**thole filled with manky hookers and racist dwarves.

Coming from a language where Cologne is not used to label neither the city nor the perfume-thingies, the joke, great as it is, doesn't really make me lol, I'm afraid.
