South Carolina's primary is open, meaning non-Republicans can vote in it.

How many black Democrats and Democratic-voting Independents will turn out for Cain?

In a hotly contested race, could black Democrats be the X factor Cain needs?

agreed, this is a non-starter....Cain has to win over the women of the GOP.  If he does that, nothing is going to stop him.

You know what they say...those women will never go back.

His brainwashed comment is not going to help Cain with blacks I would not think. Folks don't like to be characterized as dupes.

It won't hurt either: there is nothing that would hurt him more than the R next to his name. Leaving the Republican party is a necessary condition for the black electorate to take notice.

With a side of this.

Well, if this works, then the Romney campaign should get those Black Democrats to the polls.  If he can prevent Perry from winning SC, then Romney has the nomination.

African-American (25%) SC
96%  Obama
4%  McCain

I suspect that as much as 10% of the blacks will vote in the Pubbie primary, given that there will be no Dem contest. So it could make a difference. Cain prior to his brainwashed crack, would presumably  have them locked up. No doubt they tend to be very fundamentalist. That may not be the case anymore. It could be worth about a percentage point or two.

I was wondering if Blacks or African-American culture is skeptical of western capitalism because of its past association with slavery.  Capitalism in some ways was used to justify slavery as a survival of the fittest, with a rifle, and forced menial labor.  In many ways, successful capitalism today is still predicated on keeping wages low for menial labor and outsourcing jobs to cheaper foreign countries.  African Americans have never fully embraced a western "white" capitalist culture because they have also been shut out of full assimilation into the national economy, with few wealthy Black role models, and an African American community with little financial or educational support.  African Americans have struggled with forging an economic identity that brings them out of poverty, improves education, beyond the menial farming labor of the 19th century.

There is indeed such an undercurrent in Black political culture and Black representatives in congress are often the most economically left wing members.

It will be irrelevant. The blacks won't turn out to vote in the GOP primary, let alone turn out to vote for a man who said they are brainwashed.

I hope SC will make the sane choice like we did 4 years ago when McCain pulled it out, but I am beginning to worry. I am still not a buyer in Cain's longevity though.

Recall that the "sane candidate" lost big time in 2000 because of his condescending remarks about evangelicals. (Also recall the "sane candidate" lost in the general election.) I think Herman Cain could do well in South Carolina. The TEA Party is very active in that state. If Cain could pick this state up, he will gain serious traction and a shot at the nomination.
