They have a tendency to develop a huge obsession with a certain candidate that exists over a period of time, after which said obsession is dropped and the candidate is forgotten in favor of a new one. However they are open to revisiting previous obsessed over candidates (see Herman Cain now.)

It's not just you and it's not just the GOP; it's society. We obsess, get tired of it, return to previous obsession, repeat.

No, it's just that normally the GOP establishment hand-picks a candidate beforehand, who is then subjected to an up-or-down vote by the membership (George W. Bush was overwhelmingly the choice of the Republican establishment in 2000, Bob Dole was in 1996, and George H.W. Bush was in 1988)

In 2008, the establishment couldn't agree on a candidate. This time around, the problem is that the establishment's pick (Romney) is unacceptable to a large portion of the membership. That's why the Republican primary cycle has this bizarre flavor-of-the week character to it: Cain, Trump, Bachmann, Perry, Cain again, maybe Christie, and so on.

Dole actually enjoyed a substantial establishment support, especially on Capitol Hill.

I'm always willing to admit, but the question is, which one of my many problems do you mean? Wink

Maybe if you are talking about the sense of touch.

I thought it was smell.  BRTD was suggesting that he smells like the GOP primary electorate.
