...why are they so insistent that Greece, Italy, Spain et. al. must default on their debt?

I think the simplest answer to this is that Greece must default on its debt.

This really isn't as complicated as you seem to think...

The U.S. issues its own currency, for one.

As another, it's possible for the U.S. to default on its debt, but we are quite far from the point where that would be conceivable.

Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

Those countries don't drag the entire rest of the world down with them if their economies implode.

I still think the main thing is that Greece doesn't have a choice. It's nigh-on-impossible to see any way for them to pay back their debt.

Because the similarities between the two examples extend to debt... but that's where they end.

The US can address their debt issues - Greece (especially) cannot ...

Anarcho-libertarians are wetting themselves as the prospect of the US Government default because they actually think it'll fundamentally support their views about government ... of course most cannot get their heads away from their 'world-view' and deal with the international and local impacts of the United States not only being unable to pay its bills, but also being deemed a credit risk... it'll make the Lehman Brothers collapse look like nothing...

THE ONLY REASON THE NATIONAL DEBT IS IMPORTANT IS BECAUSE THERE IS A RISK OF DEFAULT. IF WE HAD NO HAD CHANCE OF EVER ONE DAY DEFAULTING IT WOULDN'T MATTER IF OUR DEBT WERE 14 TRILLION OR 140 TRILLION. GREECE ALREADY HAS A 100 PERCENT CHANCE OF DEFAULT SO MIGHT AS WELL GO OUT ON THEIR OWN TERMS THE SAME WAY A PERSON ONE BILLING CYCLE AWAY FROM BANRUKPTCY WOULD DECLARE PROTECTION THAN CONTINUE THE MADNESS. WE ARE NOT ONE CYCLE AWAY. WE ARE AT LEAST ONE DECADE, PERHAPS FIVE. ANY POLITICAL INSISTANCE ON DEFAULTING IS SELF DEFEATING THE PURPOSE OF FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY.

I HOPE YOU CAN HEAR ME.
