The last time a Democrat won SC was 1976 and that was a strange election (East vs. West). Before that Kennedy won narrowly in 1960. NM was last Republican in 2004, often voting Democratic or with the rest of the nation in landslides - going back to 1976 when it voted for Ford.

NM is more likely to go Republican, if only because it has before under the current party alignment. The Republicans are still the party of the South and even if they loose a few states from the Upper South, they're highly unlikely to loose the old South especially SC, AL and MS. Those along with some plains states and other outliers wouldn't swing in all but the most extreme landslide. NM could go Republican without a landslide, like 2004.

NM going Republican is more likely to go Republican; it was a Bush 2004 state that with the right climate can go back to the GOP. Not that he'll lose NM, but you get the idea. I think Obama over-performed there in the same way he was able to clinch Indiana.

SC on the other hand is somewhat racially polarized in the likeness of MS or AL, but slightly less Republican on the whole. Still part of the Old South style of conservatism.

SC going Dem.  Obama can win South Carolina against the right GOP candidate.  Only Gary Johnson can defeat Obama in NM, and he has about as much of a chance at the GOP  nomination as I do.....

This was a hard choice, but I went with Obama winning South Carolina.  The GOP field is pretty weak, and Obama is at least going to spend money in SC.

New Mexico. They just elected a republican and love her. It would be more even to compare Oregon or Washington to South Carolina

New Mexico is like the following states: Tennessee, Michigan, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, New Jersey, Kansas, Virginia, and Arizona. They, too, are in the habit of electing governors from the party opposite of the White House. And they all have gubernatorial elections in midterm years.

If you look at past polling, South Carolina has gone for Obama more times than New Mexico has gone Republican. Actually, I can't recall New Mexico going Republican in any polls up to date.

Obama could win South Carolina if Palin is the nominee.
I just dont see the republicans being able to flip New Mexico their way...unless that Martinez broad is on their ticket, she couldnt be any worse of a disaster then Palin was to the 08 ticket.

South Carolina could flip to Obama, because the state is so split up. Many of the Midlands counties are Democrat. Charleston voted Democrat in '08, I believe.

NM could go Republican.

If Obama is going to make inroads anywhere in 2012, it's not going to be in SC.

That's why I voted for the GOP winning NM.
