I can understand why no one from Southern Ireland has been elevated to this knighthood since the creation of the Irish Free State, but why has no one from Northern Ireland been so elevated?

It probably would have been considered insulting to the Irish government:

What in the world is Southern Ireland Smiley

There are plenty of people from the Republic who have taken a title and from the Northern Ireland as well. I haven't really read up on why they retired that bit of silliness.

Yes, like Bob Geldof.

Yes, like Bob Geldof.

But not the title; Geldof received an honorary knighthood, as did GHW Bush, Collin Powell, and more than a few others.  They can't legitimately use the title.

Duly noted.

Sir Terry Wogan has dual British and Irish citizenship, so he can use his full title.

However, I wasn't using it in a strict historical context, but as a convenient shorthand for both the Irish Free State and the Republic of Ireland.

I was just teasing a bit.  Donegal is the most northern point in Ireland after all. There is a lot of arguments and bloodshed over slight semantical differences. Technically speaking there is no such nation as the Republic of Ireland either.

Regarding titles and honours, per the Irish constitution you need to get approval from the government before accepting.

Who brought up Munster Smiley

Interesting that the motto of the order is Quis Separabit.  I saw this painted on the sides of buildings quite a bit. The blokes were less than chivalrous and didn't invite me for high tea....
