They're all Members of Stormont for the same constituency as well

Ah, ok, didn't realize this. If they don't mind doubling up like this, is there a particular reason Adams didn't just continue to serve as both MP for Belfast West and TD for Louth?

Unless your party's holding the balance of power (I.E., UUP with Major) being an MP in Northern Ireland is a non-job. He'd have a more effective job in the Dail.

Far less potential for synergy effects there. Also would have looked bad in Louth - he'd have basically been telling people he just wanted them to elect him to an additional sinecure. No. He needed to burn his bridges in the North in order to be certain of election in the South.
And Ireland having far fewer MPs and frequently narrow majorities, individual MPs tend to be quite a bit more influential. Though perhaps not Sinn Fein ones.
No idea whether there also were legal reasons.

I know that a TD can be a MP because of Disqualifications Act of 2000.
I also know that someone cannot hold an Irish local councillor seat and be a TD. You also can't be an MEP and a TD. There likely is a statute that against all dual mandates for Dail Eireann but I don't know what it is.  Perhaps one of the Irish fellas know.

The ban on dual mandates at council level came in in the early 00s but Westminster is beyond the reach of Irish legislation, so Adams could legally have been a member of both parliaments.

You have to resign as a MEP to be a TD, right? Now is that an EU rule on the mandates or a Dail thing?  A bit confusing for me sometimes.  Paisley had a triple one for a while right. MP, MEP, MLA.

Edit: Wiki says the EU banned double mandate in 2009.

Northern Ireland are planning to end double mandates I think

take Joe o'Higgins in Dublin though, He got elected in 2009 as a cllr and an MEP at the same time, so had to resign from the council, and then had to resign as an MEP when he became \ TD again
