What would have happened in 1972 general election if Wallace won the Democratic Nomination?    With or without the assassination attempt?

Discuss with maps.

Probably being a bit generous to Wallace in the rust belt but I think he'd have some residual strength there (this is, of course, taking into account after the Nixon campaign, which wouldn't have been very nice to Mr. Wallace.)

He would have won the Alabama, and possibly all the south. Before he was shot, there was a real possibility of him running as an independent again, with Schmitz as his VP.

Didn't Schmitz oppose the war?

As did Wallace to an extent. I sort of think of him like McCain pre-surge in that his feelings were either you go in full force or leave.

Wallace would have gotten crushed.  Something like Dallasfan's map, maybe minus North Carolina and West Virginia and Louisiana...

Hey, a friend of mine said something funny the other day.  He was talking about pivotal moments in history when people come to very important realizations, and he said: "You know, in the immediate aftermath of Watergate, no one in America really knew what had happened, and people were really confused about Nixon, they just didn't know what to think of him.  Then, Nixon gave a speech. and one of the last things he said was: 'I am not a crook.'  And suddenly, it dawned on everyone: 'Well now, that's exactly what he is!'"

Thats hilarious, and true!

As far as Wallace goes, Nixon may have been his worst opponent to face. He would play far better against a Rockefeller or Romney, as he could compete among Northern WWC voters and probably snag a state or two.
