Does anyone know why McGovern outperformed Humphrey in several northern counties?   Were there many anti-war activists in those areas?  Did Hispanic populations grow a lot there?

Thoughts are appreciated.

In general McGovern seemed to be a great candidate in the West : SD, ND, MT, CO, NM, NV and AK were either above or slightly below his national results.

SD was close, giving McGovern's status as favorite son.

BTW, does anyone have a list of counties that swung to McGovern in 1972? I'm guessing primarily college towns (18-year-old vote amend), McGovern's home state of South Dakota, maybe a few scattered in the interior west.

I have a map.

The counties where McGovern outperformed Humphrey are in red.  I can provide a map of counties that flipped from Nixon '68 to McGovern in 1972 if you like.  Smiley
