Audit Puts Six-Year Cost of Military’s Gay Ban at $193 Million

The Pentagon spent $193.3 million discharging and replacing troops under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy over six years, according to a Government Accountability Office report released today.

The Defense Department discharged 3,664 service members from fiscal 2004 through 2009 under the policy banning openly gay or lesbian individuals from serving. The bulk of the cost, which averages $52,800 per separation, is associated with recruiting and training replacements, according to the report.
