This is a really great idea. Too bad he didn't try earlier or to slip it under the radar but it's great to see someone so high-ranking propose this. Idiotic anti-online gambling laws will become even more pointless once some state or DC legalizes it, which will happen very soon (DC is basically on its way and California likely will, NJ seems likely to as well unless Christie vetoes it.)

Because Christie is just pure evil and hates everything you support automatically. Roll Eyes

This doesn't seem like something that would be logical for Reid to support.  If people can just sit at home and gamble, why would they go to Vegas?

That's interesting, seeing as that the Church opposes gambling.

He didn't pass judgment; he just pointed out that Christie might veto it. There's no need to be so defensive.

As the article states, it would be online gambling ran by Vegas casinos who are the biggest supporters of this.

Do you really think Reid cares more about the LDS than the Vegas casino industry?

His primary argument is pretty logical anyway, it'd be a lot better for the millions of dollars in online poker to stay in the country rather than go to very shady accounts in the Isle of Man and Cayman Islands.

He didn't pass judgment; he just pointed out that Christie might veto it. There's no need to be so defensive.

Yes. The Democrats who control the legislature seem to support it, so if they push for it Christie is kind of the only obstacle.

There's no reason to think Christie would oppose this, he has supported gambling in the past through law.

Makes sense for Reid if it benefits Vegas then.

Philosophically, he's a whore of the special interests. Functionally, he's a FF.

I don't care if people are tied to special interests as long as they do what I support. I'm not going to complain that half the Minneapolis city council is in the back pocket of all the strip club and night club owners.

It's a suck idea to let people do what they want with their money online instead of having a pointless law that is impossible to enforce and just results in millions of dollars going to mob-owned bank accounts in countries and territories with a five-digit population?

Well, government should not sanction such an all too often self destructive activity, but I might be persuaded that the alternative is worse, I admit. It is one of those fact specific questions, as to which choice sucks least - a Hobson's choice - to legalize or not to legalize.

What does pot have to do with gambling again?  No, I don't consider pot consumption self destructive except in a rather small minority of instances, where mental illness is involved, primarily. Heck, I still seem to be able to still kick ass after all these years getting high. Do you?  Smiley

My point is more than legalizing something isn't the same as the government sanctioning it. Does the government of Minnesota or city of Minneapolis sanction my strip club visits? I guess Minneapolis might...

This doesn't seem like something that would be logical for Reid to support.  If people can just sit at home and gamble, why would they go to Vegas?

Well, they'd probably be run by Vegas casinos, and if people want to gamble, they usually don't decide, "I want to go to Vegas"... they go somewhere close.  Vegas is somewhere people go for the experience, and while they're there, they gamble.

So I think this would help Vegas.

I'm in support of this... I have no objections against this if people want to spend their money on it.

Well, many of them would be run by Vegas casinos.  Many others will be financed by the people who finance Vegas casinos.  And few of the rest are likely to be frequented by clientele that would be particularly likely to visit Vegas and spend loads of money if online gambling were to continue to be quasi-forbidden.

Instead of giving government approval to certain activities, they should repeal the law entirely.
