Julian Assange is being persecuted by the US client state of Sweden, for 'sex crimes' (he didn't pull out)

No surprise here.  It is interesting that they have taking the intermediate road of trying to smear him and get him into the 'justice system' rather than simply killing him.  Of course I guess its always better to discredit than just disappear someone.

I don't think there's any doubt the U.S. is pushing Sweden's buttons.......the Swedes aren't big headline makers normally.

Well, you and Opebo are the ones who have judged him already, claiming Assange is being persecuted.  But if he raped someone, he should go to jail.   Rape is rape, regardless of the political leanings of the perpetrator.

The rape investigation has been going on for much longer than the past week.  A warrant was issued because Assange supposedly is no longer in Sweden to answer the charges.

We've presumed him innocent til proven guilty, and you're not naive enough to think the U.S. isn't putting pressure on the Swedes.  They've vacillated about these charges for some time now.....until the dump.

If I'm not mistaken, Sweden has issued a warrant for Assange's arrest to answer these charges before.  Now that he's supposedly out of the country, a broader warrant has been issued and Interpol gets involved.  That's how it works in Europe.

See this.  Vacillated is an understatment.

The U.S. pulls a lot of strings........that's how it works in Europe.

Perhaps you missed the quote from the Swedish prosecutor back in August:   ''I don't think there is reason to suspect that he has committed rape," lead prosecutor Eva Finne said.

That's one person. He might not be a rapist but he's likely a bit of an asshole. It's two different women, after all.

Gustaf, I'm not saying he's a saint, and I didn't say he was persecuted.....but I think the U.S. is being quite supportive of Sweden right now.

I presume people are familiar with the exact nature of the incident in question?  Suffice to say that his behavior, if the allegations are true, was abhorrent but still outside the usual popular conception of rape.

(He falsely claimed to be using a condom, and when it turned out he wasn't, she claimed he had sex with her under false pretenses)

Roman Polanski.

The timing seems a little peculiar, don't you think? Even if it proves to be true; Assange is jailed - Wikileaks will continue to be a pain in the arse for every government on the face of the earth; particularly the United States.

you want to see the government off the bastard, don't you?  anything less seems to amount to a dishonor in your warped sense of valor.

Well, I'll have to admit that I agree with you that the convenient rape charge lacks originality.  It'd be like indicting Al Capone for income tax evasion, but not exactly.  At least Capone actually evaded paying income taxes.  The persecution of that twisted bastard Assange is downright petty.
