Well, he's done. Nobody in the GOP with any ambition is going to say that.

Wow, maybe Daniels isn't so bad!  If someone has the balls to admit an increase in taxes is on the table (as it should be) I'm willing to listen to what they have to say.

Agreed, it's an unfortunate reality if we are to maintain a social services state.

You're forgetting that tax-hiker Mike Huckabee tied for second in 2008.

Damn, you took the words right out of my mouth...

We never hear so-called "fiscal conservatives" talk about the cost of the military empire for some reason.

The thing is that liberals don't want to cut the military to reduce the deficit or raise cut taxes, they just want the money freed up to spend on other things, like giving teachers' unions more generous acupuncture coverage or subsidizing low-emissions beekeeping.

EDIT: Freudian slip!

Idiot. At least be honest and say "bloated HCR" or "big spending Cash for Clunkers". Democrats passed a bill to save teachers and other public employees from being laid off, they didn't pass a bill to give them accupuncture coverage. With "low-emissions beekeeping" I assume you are talking about pork + a few other stupid projects. Members of both parties equally fund such things.

Wow, such powerful (not to mention mature and original) insight!  Are you running for office or are you just too lazy to debate what anyone actually says?

Well first we would need to provide some social services if that were to be the case.

I'm sorry for coming up with such a ridiculous strawman.  The Democrats would come up with far more sensible things than what I proposed, such as giving teachers' unions more generous Viagra coverage and creating American jobs by teaching Chinese prostitutes to drink responsibly.  And yes, the Republicans, especially the squeezy liberal Mike Castle/Lisa Murkowski type, often come up with equally stupid things, which is part of the reason why I'm not a blue avatar.

The big ticket items in the U.S. federal budget are, in order, defense and homeland security, social security, medicare and medicaid.  The layouts for the last three are going to grow as the baby boomers retire.  If you're going to shrink the budget deficit by cutting taxes in the coming years, you got to run on cutting considerable sums from these big ticket items.  Now, there are some campaign slogans for ya: "Eviscerate Defense Spending!"  "Cut Off Our Seniors!" "Take All Their Medicines Away!"

Daniels was understating the obvious.

Why not do what American politicians have done for years - run on increasing spending, cutting taxes and bringing down the deficit? Did I mention heartland values, pro-growth policies and fiscal responsibility? Or do you not care about the plight of the middle-class? [...continues rambling...]

So you lie about being sorry and then come up with an even more ridiculous straw man? lol

So true. I don't like that Daniels said it, but at least he's honest. I'd prefer cutting spending, even military spending (and I'm a Neo-con) to make up the difference. Even in the military, there's wasted money, and that has to be accounted for. Cutting spending should always rank first on methods to reduce the deficit.
