I find that negative campains do work to a degree. It really depends on your voters. The problem with why it works so well sometimes is because of your audience. They generally have to be uneducated and quite unaware of what is going on in the world. Since we now have the phenomenon called space time compression it is easier to absorb false hoods and have them slip into our subconscious while we take them for fact.

On the other hand, If you are educated and can establish reliable sites and sources. You are more likely to be able to see nuances and not have negatives campains work. But whoever you are it is likely that you will do the polar gradient of whatever is presented that you may turn your nose up to. Also what happens with space time compression is that we are able to gain so many differnet view points like we are there. I helps us see different views. You have to be educated and aware of what is happening. But then you have to take into account of this imagined community that you associate yourself with. For example, if your party is doing the negative campains you may say, ‘oh well. my party is right.’ or ‘well that is just him’. However if it is the other party you will assume the whole imagined community is wrong or are being total douches.

I think it can work - the Daisy ad for example, which while exaggerated beyond belief, still worked.
