Very interesting.  I had never seen anything from Bush prior to 2000 really... so I was surprised at how confident and eloquent he was when he spoke in the 1994 governors race.  Had he been like that throughout his presidency, we'd no doubt have a much much different perspective today.

Yeah, I remember seeing this Youtube video years ago.

I remember when I was in college, back in October 1998, I had dinner with a friend of mine at a pizza place, and they had MSNBC on one of the TVs, and I caught a bit of the TX gubernatorial debate between Bush and Mauro, and I wouldn't have been able to tell you that Bush was exceptionally bad in the debate format, nor did his grasp of the issues seem particularly lacking.

But it's not just Bush.  I saw a few video clips of Sarah Palin before she was picked by McCain in 2008, and she seemed fine to me.  Not just me, but other people here on Atlas had seen her too, and she was discussed as a dark horse VP choice in early 2008, and no one said that she'd be a disaster because she's an idiot (though of course plenty of people said she'd be a disaster because of inexperience).

I lived in Wisconsin during much of Tommy Thompson's tenure as governor.  And while he was never terribly articulate, he reached brand new heights of ineptitude in the 2008 GOP primary debates.

And to be bipartisan, there's also Bill Richardson.  I once saw him speak in person when he was Secretary of Energy, and saw him on TV a few times, and he seemed fine.  But when he ran for president, he suddenly came off as a bumbling baffoon.

I have no explanation for any of this.

Yet another reason living past 50 is not really a very worthwhile goal for most people.

But it does seem like people who are able to be either simple-minded enough or self-deceiving enough to maintain a righist political position tend to have the kind of lazy, unexcersized mind which is prone to early failure.

Things still aren't going away? Well, just dig up an old video that has been discussed plenty of times about George W. Bush!
