Democrats would cross-over to prop up O'Donnell if it was an open primary.

That kind of thing really doesn't happen very much out in the real world.

Right. An open primary would benefit Mike Castle significantly, not harm him. People are too stupid to vote strategically.

According to what the SOS provides:

GOP (182,796)
New Castle (101,496) (55.52%)
Kent (32,948) (18.02%)
Sussex (48,352) (26.45%)

Of course, the tea party has typically showed its strength in suburban America, so who knows...

Suburban New Castle is pretty upscale. It's horse country baby ("the hunt country" I think it along with the northern Baltimore County bit in Maryland is what it has been coined (it's some of the most halcyon developed real estate in America). Delaware is quite light on anomic exurbs. In fact, they might not exist at all. Some of the other two counties are resort and retiree areas, along with the chicken farmers. It does not leap out at one, as paranoid right wing nuttersville.

                 Dem          GOP         Other      Total
Statewide   292,738   182,796   146,212   621,746
                47.08%    29.4%     23.52%

You've never actually been to the Eastern Shore, have you? It's pretty much like the Deep South.

No, I have not, I must admit. The Eastern Shore of Delaware (I assume that you mean the two Southern counties) is like the Deep South, including the beach towns, one of which is heavily gay?

Rural Sussex County is a bit like the Deep South, accents included, except perhaps for the shore towns.  The shore towns are growing fast - but who knows how many part-time residents actually vote.

Kent County is more government-oriented, since it includes Dover and Delaware State University.

I have no earthly idea how Rehoboth Beach became a gay enclave. I never went up towards Dover often, but Sussex has the same character as the Maryland parts of the Eastern Shore (where I grew up), which is, shall we say, not progressive.

It is a nice "straight" shot from DuPont Circle. Fire Island, and Provincetown, and South Beach, are just not very convenient.

I wonder how many gays live there year-round vs. vacationing and owning condos as their second homes. Provincetown may be one of the largest gay communities on the east coast on any given weekend in summer, but the year-round population is likely in the low thousands, and Rehoboth isn't Ptown.

I was there last year and Rehoboth seemed like a large, mainstream beach community with a gay component while Provincetown is... different.

Palin has recorded a robocall for O'Donnell.
