http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2010/election_2010_governor_elections/minnesota/toplines/toplines_minnesota_governor_august_12_2010

Mark Dayton (D) - 45
Tom Emmer (R) - 36
Tom Horner (IP) - 10

Favorables:

Dayton - 53/43
Emmer - 40/50
Horner - 35/36

Also, 73% of voters see Emmer as a conservative. That's pretty impressive.

Why the huge amount of support for Horner?

And how would Emmer be doing against Mark Dayton without Horner in the race?

Knee-jerk support for the Independence Party. They never win anything, but always manage to suck up between 5 and 15% of the vote.

I'd suspect Horner's support would divide evenly between the two candidates.

The IP is the Minnesotan NOTA.

Yeah, they're kinda hilarious.  Do you know what Dayton's favorables were when he retired?

Plus, Emmer is such a conservative that Horner has room to hoover up some dissatisfied GOP moderates. But it's most kneejerk anti-establishment sentiment, I agree.

I am very pleased with these numbers.  I also watched the debate last night on Almanac.  I thought Mark Dayton did a great job calling both Emmer and Horner out on their lack of details and platitudes.  He really seemed to skewer Tom Horner.  Tom Emmer just went on and on about "reform" and being able to cut 25% out of the state budget without affecting services at all.  When pressed for details, his response was "I've already given you details".

Also, the outdoors people are really afraid of Emmer because his legislative actions have included cutting off funding for wildlife refuges and selling off state property to private hands.  This is vehemently opposed by rural Minnesotans and many conservatives who hunt and fish and are very big into conservation and environmental protection.

Tom Emmer will do very poorly in rural Minnesota.  His only strong suit will be Generation X suburban white male homeowners.

Here's a livecast of the debate today at the Game Fair

Emmer is a lousy candidate for anywhere besides his district where any Republican would win. In 2004 when he was first elected he basically got Bush's numbers. In 2006 he ran behind Pawlenty even though there was no IP candidate in his race. And in 2008 he got less votes than McCain and only got a slightly higher percentage due to undervoting.
