(Reuters) - Republican former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he will decide after November's congressional elections whether to run for the White House in 2012.

Gingrich has openly explored entering the battle for the 2012 Republican nomination to challenge President Barack Obama, making recent visits to early battleground states Iowa and New Hampshire. Gingrich said he had been to 10 states in the last two weeks.

"I think that's a decision we'll make in February or March," Gingrich said on "Fox News Sunday" of a presidential run. "This is a very hard family decision because it's such a deep commitment, and it is so absorbing."

A White House campaign by Gingrich, who led the Republican takeover of Congress in the 1994 election, got a qualified endorsement from former Democratic Party chairman and presidential candidate Howard Dean.

Dean said Gingrich would provide intellectual depth to a Republican Party that he said lacked ideas.

"They desperately need some intellectual leadership, and whatever you think of Newt Gingrich, he can supply intellectual leadership," Dean said on Fox. "So I hope he does run."

Endorsing someone for candidate is not endorsing someone for president.

It's a bit like me saying Sestak was a stronger candidate than Specter.

A thousand times yes! It's just some stupid DC journalist meme that's repeated ad infinitum with no actual basis in reality. The guy is as intellectually bankrupt as the rest of the idiots running the party.

I don't know if Gingrich is an intellectual (not that that's a bad thing), but I definitely believe he has more going on up there than Palin, Romney, Huckabee, etc.

Does this mean we're going to get a Gporter thread on "Obama/Biden vs. Gingrich/Dean"?

Howard Dean wants Barack Obama to win the election. That's why Howard Dean endorsed Newt Gingrich for the Republican nomination.

How obvious was that?... Then again, I'd probably endorse Palin over Gingrich for that.

To be fair; that book was absolute rubbish. That said his professorship is worth noting against any calls from the Left that hes an idiot or anything similar to that.

Can anyone explain this to me?  I'm not saying he's particularly intelligent or unintelligent, but I'd think a PhD. in European History could justify labeling one as an "intellectual".

I think that many of my liberal colleagues are confusing intelligent with ideologically leftist. We're so used to seeing dumb conservatives (ie Palin or Bush) that the assumption is, far right=idiot. However Newt is very smart, especially in the way that he planned the GOP takeover of the House in 1994 for almost a decade ahead of time. He's a real campaigning genius when it came to congress, but I don't see him beating Obama. He's too yesterday.
