I actually was so moved by the book, that I sent the author an email, and he was kind enough to write back. Stories written with the backdrop of a society and life that one knew just totally falling apart, do have the potential to at once evoke pathos and a sense of horrified fascination.

I probably didn't actually cry because of it but Where the Red Fern Grows had a profound emotional impact on me as a child.

Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam

Some of the letters included are very moving. The part that touched me most was the whole section devoted to last letters. Knowing that you are reading the last thing somebody ever wrote definitely invokes emotion.

I cried the first time I read Ayn Rand's Anthem. The second and third times I read it, I laughed hard.

Where the Red Fern Grows was an emotional ending - it's probably the book that made me the saddest.

Kejsaren av Portugallien by Selma Lagerlöf. I think the Brothers Karamazov also brought some tears to my eyes. But the first one is the only one where I really flat-out cried.

I wasn't insulting you, that was the name of a book.
