By 1987, the Republicans were seeing their chances of creating a political realignment much like Johnson's Great Society fade away with worries of who would be able to be a worthy torchbearer for the party as it soon entered a new decade. Without Vice President Bush in the running, the Republican field is fluid much like the Democratic field, but several names have begun to stick out. Governor James G. Martin of North Carolina has stayed true to his word with his infrastructure improvements in his state as well as his success in job creation, and has received the endorsement in early May of Governor Carroll Campbell of South Carolina. Former Governor Vic Atiyeh is an interesting candidate in the running, noted for his creation of the first statewide food bank in Oregon, his fight for environmental protection, reducing worker's compensation premiums, streamlining Oregon's land-use laws, winning legislative repeal of Oregon's controversial unitary-tax formula, launching a worldwide tourism initiative, leading successful international and domestic trade missions, opening Oregon's first overseas trade office in Tokyo, his work with improving education in his state, and energy and economic development programs. Atiyeh in early May received the high profile endorsement of Senator Bob Dole. Senator Barry Goldwater has taken the initiative to endorse  Dr. Ron Paul has been regarded as a darkhorse candidate for his vocal support for the return of the gold standard and reduction of the influence of the Federal Reserve. Interestingly, he has been the only Republican candidate thus far to criticize the policies of the Reagan administration in regards to spending, foreign policy, and the failure to balance the budget. Pete DuPont's work in Delaware includes income tax reduction, and the implementation of a constitutional amendment restraining tax increases and increases in government spending. Jeanne Kirkpatrick and Alan Keyes are known for their foreign policy credentials, and could possibly appeal to female and minority voters. Kirkpatrick has made press headlines with her invention of the Kirkpatrick Doctrine. Governor Sununu has raised controversy over his birth in Cuba, but has been legally allowed by the constitution to run due to his father being an American citizen. His success as governor combined with possible support from the Vice President, could make him a serious contender. Former Senator Laxalt's closeness with President Reagan could also potentially lead to a boost from an endorsement. Representative Jack Kemp has been the mastermind behind the economic policies pursued by President Reagan, deemed "Supply-side", and can take partial responsibility for the economic growth the country has endured during the Reagan administation

A Washington Post/ABC News Poll released May 18th, shows the state of the Republican field presently.

If the Presidential Primary/Caucus in your state was held today. who would you vote for?

Paul Laxalt 17%
Jack Kemp 14%
Vic Atiyeh 12%
Pete DuPont 10%
John Sununu 10%
Jeanne Kirkpatrick 7%
James Martin 6%
Ron Paul 4%
Alan Keyes 3%
Undecided/Others 17%
