Or does the GOP/Conservatism give off this weird cultish sort of vibe these days? The GOP/conservate functions along with the "Weekend at Bernies" deification of Reagan remind me of Scientology events and their obsession with L. Ron Hubbard.

I'd say that people idolized Obama more than Republicans idolize Reagan (maybe not more percentage, but the intensity for Obama is greater).

Ehh... I don't see it. However, the one for Obama was unnecessarily high, considering that he had done nothing in his career to deserve it. Hell, according to Rasmussen, Reagan is ranked by the public as the third greatest president, barely leading FDR.

Nonsense. Any Republican that doesn't worship at the alter of Ronald Reagan is purged from the party. Obviously the irony of 'fiscal conservatives' idolising a guy who ballooned the deficit is ignored. But he won the Cold War! Ha, Reagan had very little to do with the collapse of the iron curtain.

The Republicans need an FDR I guess. And it's not going to be Nixon or George W now is it? Better Reagan than Palin I say.

Republicans are stupid.

I'd say conservatives (at least those at CPAC) idolize Newt Gingrich more than Reagan.

The GOP is fueled by the religious right and the victims of the consumption epidemic. These two things clash together and create something that is fat, dumbed down, unintellectual, nationalistic, xenophobic, and (worst of all) paranoid. The Second American Revolution has already came and went, and no one noticed because the war as silent and devoid of blood. Every revolution needs a face. So, in a sense, you could say that Reagan is something of a founding father.

To be fair, the Democratic Party is no better. Most of us pretends to care about this All-American pandemic, but rather than protesting we just buy fukcing bumper stickers and order the small value meal. We've lost the battle for the American mind so badly that our base consists primarily of make believe people from Hollywood, those that are too young to vote, bored college students, and Dixiecrats that weren't following politics during realignment. I suppose in fairness, we also hold minorities and labor hostage as result of what the GOP has become. Now we have our idol, a young salesman with cool campaign art and an idea that he can't sell to his own minions. BRILLIANT!

Case and point, political parties in general are cultish institutions. Pick your idol, promote their principles, shun the non-believes, rinse and repeat.
