January 31st: Florida is readmitted to the Union.



February 2nd: Senator Charles Sumner introduces The Civil Rights Act of 1866. The act, which gives the remaining free slaves basic American rights

February 8th: President Lincoln announces that he will retire at the end of his 2nd term. Now there is no clear favorite for the election of 1868

February 13th – The first daylight bank robbery in United States history during peacetime takes place in Liberty, Missouri. This is considered to be the first robbery committed by Jesse James and his gang, although James's role is disputed.

February 14th: The next wave of ships leave with 75,000 free slaves.

March 1st: The KKK kills three African Americans in Savannah Georgia. This is the first murder by the clan.

March 8th: Louisiana is readmitted to the Union.


March 14th: After a three week break, Congress starts again. Up for a vote is the Civil Rights Act 1866.

March 24th: The Civil Rights act of 1866 is approved by The House of Representatives.

April 1st: Vice President Johnson, on his Swing Around The Circle tour, admits to his aides that he is considering running for the Democratic nomination for President

April 6th: The Civil Rights Act of 1866 is passed in the Senate

April 9th: The Act is signed into law by President Lincoln. This is considered a land mark decision for the remaining freed slaves.

April 10th: The ASPCA is founded in New York City

May 1st: The Next wave of ships leaves for Haiti with 250,000 Thousand slaves. The government fear Hatti will be overcrowded, so President Lincoln proposes an amendment to the bill allowing ships to go to Africa.

May 10th: The amendment passes both houses of Congress, with the President signing the bill.

May 16th: The Senate passes the Nickel Bill, eliminating the half dime. The Nickels will start in circulation by 1868.

June 10th:The Metric Act of 1866 is introduced in the House

June 13rd: The KKK is having an uprising in Georgia. this makes the president Worry. He states to Hannibal Hamlin, "We are one step away from a war with the KKK".


The President who is considering another war.

July 4 – The Great Fire of Portland, Maine kills two and leaves 10,000 homeless in the worst fire in an American city at the time.

 July 23 – The Judicial Circuits Act reduces the number of United States circuit courts to nine and the number of Supreme Court justices to seven.

July 24 –Mississippi is readmitted to the Union


 July 25 – The U.S. Congress passes legislation authorizing the rank of General of the Army (now called "5-star general"); Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant becomes the first to have this rank.
