You've got me all wrong.  I am on their side.

Much more so than you I think.

I don't believe in 'good' or 'evil', but you're right Freedomburns, war is always quite bad for some people - usually more people than it benefits.

The title of this thread is a paraphrase of a quotation from a speech given by former president Jimmy Carter during his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2002.

Here is the exact quote:

"War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn to live together in peace by killing each other's children."

But that's against free speech! Doesn't that go against your Jeffersonain conservative principles?!

I thought the idea was that you write-off people by saying "thats your democratic freedom!", so you can portray them as misguided and yourself as rational...

Oh wait, I forgot that rule people like you have where you'll tolerate freedom of speech for those who you disagree with, but just so long as too many people don't listen.  You must think people are listening to people like freedomburns (they are).

What method are you intending to use to coerce him?

"That's the sound of freedom, son. You're free to say no more."

Kum ba Yah, my lord, Kum ba yah.  War is bad, any other original insights?

lol  lol    Kum bye ya...   lol

Nope, that's about it.  I can't think of any more important message.  I'll see if this flute plays a different note after we stop killing people for no good reason.

Now let's all hold hands and sit in a circle and talk about our feelings.

lol

War is not evil - certain people are evil. A war can be just - in fact it is often the case that both sides in a war fight for their own version of justice. Is a jihad not a war fought for Allah? A war to bring god's enemies to justice? But while many jihad fighters think what they do is just, many of us think it is unjust and it is just to fight them. And if war is evil, it is technically evil to fight in self-defense if attacked - what is a fight to the death but a war between two people?

Blanket statements like 'war is evil' are foolish and arrogant. Do you not think that most people involved in a war would not rather live in peace? Yet even though most on both sides want peace, they fight on for their own version of justice. War is a complex concept with many factors involved that is too often boiled down into simple terms and reasons.

To bring up an old idea of mine and Gustaf...assassinations are preferable to wars. Is it worse to kill the top 10 or 100 or 1000 people that rule a hostile country than to kill 10X or 100X as many in a war? And yet, what did American liberals choose to ban? Yep, the former...

Our greatest foreign policy president.
Ahhh, Jimmy Carter.  Expensive gas, no economic growth, a pitiful military, and impeasement of the Soviets.  Oh yeah sure, you can take Afghanistan, what do we care.  Oh the Iranians seized hostages from our embassy. Lets try a spec ops strike to rescue them.  Lets not attack them overtly and try to knock off the Ayatollah.

Carter should have been impeached for maladministration.  War is.  The policy behind the war may be good or it may be evil.  War is but an instrument of that policy.
