I don't get some of his moves if he's planning on running, namely supporting Scozzafava and calling Steele's critics in the GOP racists.

Didn't he already have one, or is that an independent organization?

I thought he had one too, but I guess that was just an "issue advocacy group" or some such thing.  The issue advocacy group didn't have $ limits on the size of contributions, but it was limited to promoting issues, and wasn't able to directly donate $ to candidates.  The PAC he's created now can actually make direct donations to candidates, and is more in line with what Huckabee, Pawlenty, Romney, etc. have.

Gingrich has now called himself a top tier candidate for 2012:

Not a fan of Gingrich, but he is certainly a lot better than some of the other wackjobs seeking the GOP nomination.

Agreed.  You might not like what he says, but he's at least articulate compared the bumbling fools the GOP puts on TV lately.

I actually respect Newt Gingrich, as I've said before, even though I wouldn't trust him anywhere near the White House.

He's too insider-y for the modern GOP, which is milking its "revolutionary" backwoods antics for all they're worth.

Out of all the prospective candidates, Gingrich and Palin seem to be the ones who are taking the biggest strides towards running. I'd be suprised if Gingrich wouldn't run, he thinks he can win. He won't.

Uh...no.  Romney and Pawlenty have done everything short of announcing their candidacies.  Pawlenty, who actually has a day job as governor of MN, is jetting around the country every week, giving speeches in front of GOP audiences.  Romney's PAC, rather than actually donating $ to GOP candidates, which is its nominal purpose for existing, spends most of its money keeping virtually all of Romney's 2008 campaign staff on the payroll, keeping them in waiting for his 2012 candidacy.  Romney is also coming out with a political / policy-centric book rather than a retrospective on the '08 campaign in the vein of "Going Rogue".

Palin has done next to nothing to indicate that she intends to run for president.  She quit her job as governor, thereby inviting attacks on her commitment to public life in any future campaign (and emphasizing voters' doubts about her readiness for higher office).  She's turned down countless invitations to speak at GOP events....the kind that Pawlenty and Romney do routinely (this includes a couple of invitations to Iowa).  She's done very little campaigning for GOP candidates.

The only thing that Palin has done to indicate that she wants to run for president is start a PAC.

I'm not so sure he thinks he can win, or that he's going to run.  I suspect that, like in the 2008 cycle, he wants people to think he's going to run, so that they'll pay attention to him.

He would be interesting to see him run just to see what kinds of ideas he brings to the table. Although I don't think he's a very strong candidate for the GOP nod with his recent mellowing out it would be interesting to see him on the national stage again.

A solid canidate for President.  I knew he wasn't going to run in 2008 because the Republicans didn't have shot.  The only one who could have possibly won the presidency in 2008 was McCain and he lost badly because of Palin and the economy.  However, Gingrich is probably the guy to watch if he indeed runs for President.  He's a good speaker, he's well-established within the party, he knows how to deflect attacks, he will have great strength in swing states in the northeasy like New Jersey, Pennsylvannia, New Hampshire and Maine, and he reflects the state of the Republican party.  If Palin doesn't run, Newt will be extremely dangerous in states that McCain won.

I don't think he'll do much.  His closet is empty, but that's because everything is out in the open.  He had some hypocrisy while wagging his finger at President Clinton for having an affair with Monica Lewinsky.  He also has some ethics violations and something else I can't remember.  While he's a good conservative, I just think those skeletons are going to be too much for him to overcome.

Speaking of rising stars in the GOP, I think Palin's star may pop pretty soon, but I like Thune's chances of being the next real leader of the Republican Party.
