I've noticed a strinking number of people who consider themselves Libertarians online. Now, although I am sure there are Libertarians offline, too (obviously), I've seen only one Badnarik sign and I always look for political signs. Why is it that Libertarians are so common on online forums, yet I never find them "in the real world"?

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but I'm interested in what people think.

Perhaps because of Limited funds within the Libertarian party?

Most libertarians enjoy the convienence and profit-emphasis of much of the Internet, but especially the way it's so unregulated and expressive.  Truly free speech exists on the Internet, and that appeals to libertarians.  They have a lot of ideas they want to share and a lot of information they want to access, both of which can be done quickly online.

Plus, the ideas of independence, privacy, civil rights, social tolerance and so forth are a much easier sell online, because the sort of people who come online are more likely to hate the preachy controls of stuffshirt Democrats and intolerant Republicans.

When your party is less than 3% of an entire state, it's a lot easier to consort online.  Libertarians congregate and dominate online in a way not possible in real life because of geography.  You'll notice a huge number of bloggers who are somewhat libertarian/

If someone actually tried to force a Libertarian to stay inside, they would probably get shot. Wink

Nobody forces us to do anything.

Believe it or not, stuff like this is my only means of Libertarian activism. I can't vote nor do I have the extra personal funds to donate to the Badnarik campaign.

I did put buttons on my backpack though. One that has the Badnarik/Campagna logo, one that says "The Road to Hell is Paved With Republicrats". and one that says "100% Self Government".

That third one had people asking me if i was an anarchist.
